£16.5m Space City expansion offers high tech business opportunities

The next expansion phase at Space City Leicester is nearing completion, with the development of two new Dock-style office buildings and nine high-quality manufacturing spaces.

The two new offices will provide space for up to 45 businesses, with nine purpose-built units for light manufacturing, providing more than 21,500 sq ft of industrial workspace.

To support the increasing demand for information about Space City, a brand-new website has been developed at www.space-city.co.uk. The new site brings together information on Space City’s exceptional combination of complementary activities; inspiration through education and skills development, innovation through world leading global research, and implementation through high-quality, collaborative workspaces.

Space City Leicester is a unique business park dedicated to space and Earth observation, making Leicester a key part of the UK’s Space sector. The site is also home to non-space related knowledge economy businesses, those working towards decarbonisation, innovative start-ups and established businesses looking for grow-on space.

Space City Leicester represents a £233 million investment in new and planned facilities to the north of Leicester city centre. The site is home to the University of Leicester’s science and innovation hub - Space Park Leicester, the award-winning National Space Centre visitor attraction and the flexible workspace and high-tech business incubator facilities at DOCK. The new DOCK facilities are due to open on 1 September 2024.

Mike Denby, Director of Inward Investment and Place Marketing at Leicester City Council, said: “Leicester and Leicestershire have a rich heritage in the space sector, particularly with all of the achievements from the University of Leicester over many years. With the creation of Space City, we’re continuing to invest in our infrastructure to ensure that the next generation of space-focused businesses have the ideal platform for success.”

Chas Bishop, Chief Executive at the National Space Centre, said: “The presence of 100 space, space-enabled and hi-tech enterprises surrounding the National Space Centre provides a fantastic window into the world of work for young people on our post-16 pathway programmes. Careers conferences, industry showcases and space camps are an ever-growing facet of the National Space Centre’s work.”

Space Park Leicester, which opened in 2022, joined the National Space Centre at Space City to help further the UK's space sector, creating a one-of-a-kind, integrated ‘end-to-end’ community of industry experts, academics, government departments and students. Together, they cover everything from innovative space engineering through to the capture, analysis and application of space data.

Space Park Leicester has already attracted Rolls-Royce, Airbus, CGI, Maxar and the UK Space Agency to Space City, allowing residents to regularly network with global players in the space industry at monthly Cosmic Coffee events.

The Space City partnership includes Space Park Leicester, University of Leicester, National Space Centre, DOCK, Invest in Leicester, Leicester City Council, and the Leicester and Leicestershire Business and Skills Partnership. Space City is also part of the Loughborough and Leicester Science and Innovation Enterprise Zone.
