The third meeting of the heads of space agencies of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) has begun. Mentioned meeting took place as part of the Space Technologies Conference (STC2024), which is already being held for the third time with the participation of space players from the Central Asia region.
The meeting, hosted by the Turkiye Space Agency, is attended by member countries (Azerbaijan, Turkiye, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan) of the OTS, and Hungary as the observer country. The aim of this meeting was to support joint projects in the space sector among Turkic states and to establish common areas of activity to foster the development of mutual relations. The central focus of the meeting's agenda was the importance of collaboration for the sustainability of space activities. The chairman of Azercosmos, Sammadin Asadov, speaking at the meeting, highlighted the significance of representation of Turkic states' space delegations at the International Astronautical Congress held in Baku. He emphasized that we are ready to continue joint efforts in science, business, and innovation in the space arena.
It was announced at the meeting that Azerbaijan is ready to implement a CubeSat (Cube satellite) satellite project with Turkey and Kazakhstan with an optimal budget. It is envisaged to facilitate knowledge exchange among these countries with experience in satellite technology development, as well as to use future CubeSat satellites jointly for monitoring climate change in the region by acquiring satellite images. Additionally, within the CubeSat project, it has been proposed to add sensors to the satellites to monitor carbon and methane gases.
Also, taking the opportunity, the space community attending the meeting has been invited to the COP29 climate conference, which will be held in our country this year.
Later then was emphasized that practical platforms should be developed to increase research and development on space-related issues through integration and exchange of scientific knowledge in universities.
At the end of the meeting, it was announced that the STC which brings together space experts from Central Asia, will be held in Baku next year. Baku's experience in hosting global events in the space sector, the next meeting of the OTS space agencies also be held in Baku next year.
The meeting continued with experts working in the space sector gathering in working group formats.
