Vicinity Technologies joins Space South Central Network to advance 5G non-terrestrial communications

Vicinity Technologies has announced its formal membership of Space South Central, the largest regional space cluster in the UK.

The announcement coincides with the company's participation in Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2025 where it will showcase its pioneering 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technology.

Visitors to the event will be the first to witness the demonstration of Vicinity's latest 5G NTN base station and user terminal solutions showcased in their stand (Hall 7, Stand 7A11). The solutions are aimed at improving satellite connectivity for global communications, emergency response, and remote infrastructure.

Vicinity Technologies has over 15 years of experience in developing 4G and 5G radio access equipment. The company has received funding from the UK Space Agency to expand its terrestrial network expertise into software-based solutions for 5G NTNs, meeting the increasing demand for seamless connectivity between ground and space-based communications systems.

Dr Eric Tsang, CEO of Vicinity Technologies, said: “Joining Space South Central represents a significant milestone in our growth strategy. The South-Central region of the UK has established itself as a major hub for space innovation, and through Space South Central we aim to forge new relationships with potential customers and collaborators both in the UK and internationally.”

The company is working closely with Tobias Marchant, International Partnership Manager at Space South Central, to promote UK space capabilities on the global stage, beginning with their joint presence at Mobile World Congress Barcelona. He said: “The addition of Vicinity Technologies will further enhance our mission to foster growth and innovation in the UK space sector.

“With our extensive network of UK and international contacts, we believe that Vicinity will create new opportunities for collaborative projects and technological advancements.”

“We're particularly excited about the potential to establish new government-funded projects for developing next-generation core technologies and products through the connections we make via Space South Central,” added Tsang. “Our software solutions can be customised to meet the specific requirements of partners in the space sector.”

The satellite communications specialist has also confirmed its status as a resident member of SETsquared Surrey at Surrey Research Park, further embedding the company within the UK's space sector.

Caroline Fleming, Director of Surrey Innovation District at the University of Surrey, said: “We’re incredibly excited to welcome Vicinity to Surrey Research Park and our SETsquared business incubator. Their pioneering work in 5G non-terrestrial networks, combined with their ambition, makes them a fantastic addition to our thriving space community. We look forward to supporting their growth and seeing them contribute to the Park's success as a ‘launchpad’ for space innovation."
